“Tree of Life”-the ultimate balancing act.

[nggalleryid=5]
treeoflife2.JPG

This is a recently completed sculpture that symbolizes the fragile state of our planet and the wonderful diversity of life that is now in peril. We are concerned about our own lives, our own families, our own friends and our own communities; so we should also be concerned about the planet we inhabit. We have no other place to live.

10% of the purchase price of the “Tree of Life” will be donated to Doctor’s Without Borders, Heifer, or the Nature Conservancy-whichever is the purchaser’s choice.

  • Lunar Obelisk

My daughter, Shannon, and I were fortunate to have our outdoor sculpture, Lunar Obelisk, selected for exhibition in the Lake Oswego Gallery Without walls. Over sixty rotating or permanent sculptures are exhibited in the Gallery Without Walls, organized and supported by the Arts Council of Lake Oswego.  Lake Oswego is noted as one of the top cities in supporting the arts in the country. Lunar Obelisk is a ten-foot black ferrocement and copper work that has been sited in front of Banner Bank on Boones Ferry Road in Lake Oswego, Oregon. We wish to thank the Arts Council of Lake Oswego for selecting our piece.

Copper Diving Duck Copper Diving Duck, mahogany and copper, (c)2007

We delivered the work to the Freed Gallery yesterday and here are a few images of my new sculpture. The Copper Diving Duck is reminicent of those old helmeted diving suits, which were nicknamed “Iron Ducks”. This piece is actually made of copper and mahogany but reminds me of a duck in a diving helmet.

Original “glyphs” resembling ancient texts are carved into the alabaster and mahogany. Copper and copperleaf add elegant contrast to this timeless form.

About Me

Jim Willis

I transform stone, copper, and wood into works that combine a primitive spirituality with a commanding interaction with their environment. Using totemic forms, flowing surfaces and rugged textures, I create sculpture that suggests mysteries of time and place. Read more
